Configuration Management with Chef

Configuration Management with Chef

Binary Repository Management takes Configuration Management to the next level.

Cloud computing has made it very easy for DevOps and IT organizations to spin up environments to any degree of complexity very quickly and easily. However, as organizations spin up different environments, maintenance, and repeatability become a big problem. This is why configuration management has, by now, been widely adopted by most enterprise IT organizations. Defining environments as lines of code has brought sound software practises such as versioning, reviews, testing and automation to the world of configuration management spawning the concept of Infrastructure as Code.

Artifactory embraces this idea and positions itself at the heart of DevOps with support for Chef, an industry-standard tool for configuration management. Managing configuration and infrastructure as binaries in Artifactory puts several new capabilities at the fingertips of DevOps organizations.

chef

Distribute and share configuration: Local Chef cookbook repositories (i.e. local “supermarkets”) provide a central location to deploy and share Chef cookbooks.

Security and Access Control: The multiple layers of security that Artifactory offers gives you fine-grained control over who can access different configuration packages.

Smart search: Extensive search capabilities, including AQL (Artifactory Query Language), make it quick and  easy to find any specific cookbook you need.

Reliable and consistent access to packages: You don’t have to reinvent the wheel if someone has already uploaded a configuration you need to Chef Supermarket. You can proxy this public repository in Artifactory with a remote repository and cache Chef cookbooks that you download locally. This way your configuration can be deployed from your local network with no latency, and you’re not susceptible to network outages or any issue with the public repositoriy.

Checksum-based storage: Artifactory’s unique architecture that uses checksum-based storage means it is a single source of truth for your Chef cookbooks. Not only does it prevent duplication of packages, it makes operations like copy, move and delete as instantaneous as simple database transactions.

Automation through REST API: With the extensive REST API offered by Artifactory, spinning up an environment can be a fully automated process triggered by different events.

Sound software practice has taken configuration management to the realm of infrastructure as code. Artifactory has taken it to the next level as Infrastructure as Binaries
